Fiber optic cable interruption in Mozambique
The faults were on cables between Mozambique and South Africa, according to Tanzania's information and technology minister Nape Nnauye. Mozambique and Malawi were seeing a medium impact while Burundi, Somalia, Rwanda, Uganda, Comoros and Madagascar had less severe. A few weeks ago, Internet connectivity in Mozambique and other African countries suffered significant interruptions, an incident linked to failures in the SEACOM and EASSy submarine cable systems, which are essential for the network infrastructure. Tanzania and the French Indian Ocean island of Mayotte were the hardest hit, the internet surveillance group said. “The incident is attributed to failures. We studied the economic impacts from subsea cables that arrived in Kenya in Mozambique (e., SEACOM, EASSy) to understand how they changed the economy. Improved connectivity led to increases in internet usage and decreases in costs, but infrastructure and afordability challenges meant that impacts. Mozambique is improving its digital connections to the rest of the world with the installation of two cross-border fibre cables to South Africa. -
